Everyday stuff

On Sunday and yesterday I did another killer shift of 33hrs on the trot and once again I arrived home feeling on top of the world .. it's a question of mind over matter! I love my job!

Lately I have been doing a few shifts at a care-home where 5 adults live, they all have very high personal needs, are unable to talk and most can't walk. In the past I have turned these shifts down as they can be emotionally grilling and quite physically challenging too, without any feedback I thought. But on Saturday I took one of the guys to the cinema and thoroughly enjoyed spending the afternoon with him. He has never eaten by himself when I've been around and always I'm asked to spoon-feed him, he's perfectly fine at other meal times. Last night whilst watching a DVD I was sitting on the floor and he came over to me then fell asleep with his head on my lap. The woman who he usually sits next too was rather confused and kept looking at him in a questioning manner, she also gave me the evil eye. When it was time to go my beau was visibly upset and outright ignored my good-bye! It was moving to see that although they can't communicate through the channels we use, these guys experience exactly the same emotions, though possibly with more innocence and intuition.

After this shift I ended up going out for a couple of drinks with a lovely colleague, I didn't know alcohol could reach one's head so fast. Probably due to mental exhaustion .... but I would prefer to put it down to my fitness levels. Tommy, a Glaswegian friend, and I have signed up to do the Edinburgh 10KM run in May! I can not run but I can waddle and surprisingly that should be enough! Lots of training in the next 13 weeks, another runner and I have got a program which requires a lot of commitment, ie 1 day off a week, but included is fun stuff like yoga, we'll be on form soon!

Tonight is my first class in complimentary therapies, I'm looking forward to it! What makes it even better is one of my closest friends, Giulia (pronounced in a strong Italian accent), does an astrology course which is held at the same place and same time so that means a good social afterwards!

Today is my brother's birthday ... Kev, have a good one Old man!
