Pictures and Politics

This has been a great week! I saw three movies that Spielberg was involved in - Memoirs of a Geisha, Munich ... and wait for it ... The Goonies!

Munich left many unanswered questions. Were we supposed to empathize with Bana as he was a loving father yet he was assisinating many people who he didn't truly know much about?
Spielberg's film has been called an attack on the Palestinians and he has been rebuked as "no friend of Israel." By not taking sides, he has taken both sides. Is he trying to make a point that Isreal attacks Palestine, and Palestine attacks Isreal... and it just goes on and on? He's asking the question is all this violence in Isreal and Palestine solving anything for anyone??? Or just more pain and misery for both sides ... Isreal always afraid ... Palestine full of hatred ... He doesnt have the answer, maybe no one does.

This week I had 2 lovely people to stay for a few nights. Avi is Israeli born but has spent most of his life growing up in the US, now he's globetrotting for 6 months then returning to Israel to study Middle Eastern History and Politics. His sister Miri was born and educated in Israel, has lived in the US, worked all over the world and now settled in England enjoying indulging in the arts and crafts industry. We organised this through www.couchsurfing.com a brilliant website that puts travellers in contact, offering free accommodation for starters but more importantly the chance to get to know each other and exchange cultures. What more could you ask for! We site-saw, ate great meals, they met a few of my (non-Scottish) friends, had interesting and enriching chats over a few glasses of wine, basically had a brilliant time! Avi and I even visited a Buddhist priory, learnt about tao-zen meditation ... then later that night ended up at a chippie eating deep fried mars bars .... yummmmm!
